12007 ILLUMINATED WHITE LILLY

The White Violets, White Lilly, and Pine Cones Illuminated Manuscripts are exquisitely detailed pages taken from the Redwood’s 1841 facsimile of “Le Livre d’Heures de la Reine Anne de Bretagne (The Book of Hours of Queen Anne of Brittany)”. The Book of the Hours was the standard book of popular devotion in Western Europe during the late Middle Ages. The richness and detail of Queen Anne of Brittany’s reflects her status as first wife of King Charles IV and subsequently that of Louis XII, and thus twice Queen of France. The intricacy and detail of these handmade pages were meant to evoke contemplation, but the beautiful flora and fauna of this manuscript served also as a herbarium, with over 750 plants represented. The sheer beauty of these manuscripts made a facsimile reproduction such as this notable one produced in 1841 by Messieurs LeAbbe and DeLauney of Paris- much sought after, and highly prized.
